5 steps to Start Something New

Jun 17, 2019

Starting new things can be exciting but also really scary. For a lot of people, that fear of the unknown can keep them from taking action.

As someone who has started a lot of things, I want to share with you my best tips for getting over the fear and just starting the thing!

1. Decide

That seems so obvious but really making the decision that you are going to do something is really powerful. How many times have you let something die at wanting to do it?

When you decide, you get past that first hurdle and start taking action. If you're not sure how to get to that point, I recommend telling a friend. Having someone to keep you accountable to your goal can help you stick to it, even if you don't feel like it!

2. Make a plan

Now that you've made the decision, the next step is to map it out! What is the first thing you need to do make progress? And the thing after that? Map out your first 10 steps, and set a timeline. Is there anything you need to do first? Checking those boxes off quickly will give you the momentum to keep going.

3. Take inspired action

The hardest thing about starting is taking action. Listen to your gut and start putting one foot in front of the other. If you have an inspired idea, take note of it and take action. The more you listen to that voice guiding you, the more inspiration you'll get.

Action breeds confidence, so the more action you take, the more confident you will be in your next steps.

4. Celebrate your victories

In the beginning, they can be small and far between, but celebrate them! Don't wait to be proud of yourself until the end, be proud now. Proud you started, proud you kept going, proud you stuck through the parts when you felt like you sucked.

When we take the time to feel gratitude for how far we have come, we re-charge our batteries and can keep going. If you don't take the time to recognize what you're doing to make progress, you'll get stuck feeling like you aren't getting anywhere. This feeling of stagnation and being stuck can keep you from really getting to where you want to go.

5. Just keep going

Even if you have a rocky start, or things don't go as smoothly as you imagined, just keep going. Starting something new is like pushing a large boulder up a mountain. You can't see the top, and the longer the climb, the harder it will get. But once you get to the top, the boulder starts to gain momentum and roll on it's own down the other side.

So many people lose momentum and start to slide down the mountain, but if you just keep putting one foot in front of the other, you will get to the point where the boulder starts rolling on it's own. It's so worth it to see that momentum take off in your new endeavor.

Whether it's starting a new business, starting a new hobby, starting a blog, or starting a podcast, I hope you take action and just start.
